If you’re dreaming of a summer vacation, ‘go wild’ and choose one of the best safari lodges in Cape Town – Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. With extensive landscapes, and conservation and sustainability at its core, you’ll find Sanbona – a malaria-free zone – a convenient three-hour drive from Cape Town.  So read on as we’ve listed 6 of the best reasons to pack a bag and head out into the Little Karoo for an all-round adventure!

1. ROUTE 62

When travelling to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve from Cape Town, take the ‘road less travelled’ along Route 62. With less traffic, it’s scenic beauty – as it winds its way through quaint country towns like Robertson and Montague towards Barrydale – will captivate you all the way to Sanbona. Be sure to build in some extra travel time as Route 62 offers many exploration points in the form of farm stalls, the longest wine route in the world, and restaurants perfect for a traditional road trip breakfast or country lunch.

2. ENJOY A DIGITAL DETOX IN THE LITTLE KAROO

Sanbona covers 62 000 hectares of the Little Karoo and it’s where peace and tranquility are the order of the day. The only time you’ll possibly need a phone is to take a picture! Enjoy nature walks, bird watching, visiting ancient rock art and fossil sites or head outside after dark on a guided star gazing excursion to be humbled by Mother Nature’s ‘light show’ – no data required!

3. CONSERVATION IS AT THE HEART OF WHAT WE DO

The spirit of Sanbona lies not only in its commitment to rehabilitate the fragile ecosystems of the Little Karoo, but also to restore and sustain endangered wildlife and flora for the benefit of future generations. Being owned and operated on a not for profit basis means that your visit contributes to all current and future conservation efforts… pretty neat don’t you think?

4. FREE-ROAMING GAME, BUT DON’T FORGET TO LOOK DOWN

There is nothing more exhilarating than a herd of elephant ambling slowly past your game viewing vehicle, giraffe peeking out at you above the tree tops, or watching young rhino mock fight on the plains right in front of you.  The reserve also teems with smaller species of flora and fauna so be sure to ‘look down’ while on game drives and wilderness walks at the little guys that do a big job in sustaining and supporting life on the reserve.

5. THREE LUXURY LODGES AND A TENT

Even our three luxury lodges have been positioned with extraordinary sensitivity to the area. Choose from family-friendly accommodation at Gondwana Family Lodge, the serene elegance of Tilney Manor or the part-tent, part-cabana style accommodation of Dwykwa Tented Lodge. For the more adventurous and those wanting a real bush experience, Explorer Camp is right up your alley!

6. KIDS ON SAFARI

Enjoyed at Gondwana Family Lodge, this farmhouse-style lodge is perfect for little Eco-warriors. The Kids on Safari programme allows for many hours of exploration and fun – from treasure hunts, short night and day bush walks in a fenced area, insect catching and frogging and a visit to the Skull Garden, there’s all this and more to experience on a Family Safari!
