We have some exciting news regarding buffalo adding to our unique Big 5 safari experience.
They have all been released from their segregated reserve into the main wilderness area here at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. Our core goal is to have as open and natural system as possible, here in the Karoo, which includes having a self-sustaining population of buffalo, that is integrated into the natural ecosystems of Sanbona.
Our lion population constitutes the main threat to the survival of the buffalo but the pride structure and the fact that they are often fragmented into smaller sub-groups, means there is rarely a group large enough to successfully hunt a herd of buffalo. We will be monitoring the buffalos progress closely, to determine the likely long term success of this project. We do know that at least one calf has been born since the release!
We will be sure to keep you updated on their progress.
